(Crisp) Movie Review: SEARCHING by FENIL SETA

Searching is a unique film as it’s completely told from the point-of-view of smartphones and computer screens, somewhat on the lines of Unfriended. This factor itself makes it a unique experience but Searching goes one step forward in comprehensively showing the internet the way it is in reality. Director (of Indian origin) Aneesh Chaganty and writers Aneesh and Sev Ohanian hence ensure they make good use of this unique opportunity. And thankfully, they have a great story to tell as well. The plot has several intriguing developments and twists and turns that keep viewers on the edge of their seats. The climax is quite a shocker too. Again, the impact is manifold as it’s a ‘screen film’. Post-screening, it was great to listen to Aneesh about how his team worked on this film for two years with their iMacs constantly crashing! Talking of performances, John Cho is the soul of the film and delivers a smashing performance. Debra Messing lends excellent support. Michelle La is lovely and plays the difficult part with ease. Sara Sohn leaves a huge mark in a cameo. Searching will be released in USA and India on August 3 and it’ll be a crime to miss this flick, easily the best Hollywood film of the year so far!

My rating – ***** out of 5!
