(Crisp) Movie Review: NEXT GOAL WINS by FENIL SETA

Next Goal Wins, directed by Taika Waititi, is based on how the American Samoa’s football team got a new lease of life thanks to an inspiring coach. The film starts showing the humiliating defeat faced by the team and what happens thereafter. The makers keep the tone light and that helps immensely. The humour comes out really well and the finale is great. However, the film never goes on a high though the first scene sets the expectations high. Also, it gives a déjà vu of films like Chak De India and Jhund. Michael Fassbender (Thomas Rongen), however, shines. Oscar Kightley (Tavita) wins hearts. Kaimana (Jaiyah) leaves a mark as the transgender player. David Fane (Ace), Beulah Koale (Daru), Elisabeth Moss (Gail), Uli Latukefu (Nicky Salapu), Semu Filipo (Rambo) and others do well in supporting parts. All in all, Next Goal Wins is a decent one-time watch.
