Marathi theatre to resume on July 12, 2020? Spruha Joshi’s post adds to the mystery

Since the Coronavirus-induced lockdown began on March 25, the lovers of cinema and theatre have had a harrowing time. Theatres were asked to shut even before the said lockdown. After all, it’s a space where people sit in close proximity in an air-conditioned environment. Such a situation is apt for the Coronavirus to spread. Hence, even though the country is now in an unlock phase, theatres haven’t been allowed to resume operations anywhere in the country.

As a result, a poster and a video clip on social media announcing that a new Marathi play is about to be launched at your ‘favourite theatre’ on July 12, has created a flutter among the Marathi play. The poster and video was uploaded by popular Marathi film and TV actress Spruha Joshi. This message has raised eyebrows as also a host of questions. What exactly is this play? Who is directing it? Who are the artists? What is the venue for staging the play? How did the Government give permission for staging the play when all theatres are closed during this period of lockdown? What about the safety of audiences in terms of social distancing while watching the play?

Sadly, there are no answers available to these queries and it’s only on July 12 that the mystery will be unveiled.

The Marathi theatre has faced many challenges in the past but huge support of its fans has helped in overcoming these issues. This time too, the hope is that it would be these very connoisseurs who will stand behind this unique experiment and ensure its success.
