(Crisp) Movie Review: WAR MACHINE by FENIL SETA

War Machine is an upcoming Hollywood film that’s releasing on Netflix on May 26, 2017. I and 200-250 other viewers were lucky enough to see this film on the big screen thanks to the #JioMAMIFilmClub (and also got a chance to see Brad Pitt live!). It is inspired from a real life incident involving US Army in Afghanistan in 2009. It is essentially an anti-war film and attempts to talk about the disastrous impact of war amidst a lot of laughs. The humour is brilliantly woven in the narrative and makes for a great watch. It’s so nice to see how the makers have taken a dig at then US President Barack Obama, the working of the army and most importantly on former Afghanistan president Hamid Karzai (portrayed amazingly by Ben Kingsley). Brad Pitt is terrific in the leading role. The way he has changed his body language and way of speaking is seen to be believed. I don’t know if Netflix films can be nominated for Oscars but if they can’t, then Brad, I guess, has lost a great chance of getting nominated for this film. On second thoughts though, it is debatable whether this film would have got any nomination in the first place since it question USA’s military policies in Afghanistan. Other actors that leave a mark are Aymen Hamdouchi, Keith Stanfield and John Magaro. A fine work by writer-director David Michôd despite a few minor blemishes. This one guarantees 120 minutes of thought-provoking entertainment – do give it a try!

My rating – **** out of 5!
