(Crisp) Movie Review: SHER SHIVRAJ by FENIL SETA

Sher Shivraj is a recently released Marathi film which is the fourth part of what can be called the Maratha Cinematic Universe. The third part, Pawankhind, released in February 2022 and was one of the biggest blockbusters of Marathi cinema. Sher Shivraj tells the story of how Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj defeated the mighty Afzal Khan, through physical prowess and psychological tactics. The 153 minute long film moves at a slow pace and takes time for the build up. At certain points, the audiences might feel restless. However, all the build up helps with the last 30 minutes being terrific. The audience in my show was not reacting at all but towards the end, there was a frenzy in the theatre! What’s surprising is that this is a popular story from the life of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and everyone from kids to adults know about it. Yet, the execution, particularly in the finale, makes it worth a watch. Chinmay Mandlekar (last seen as Farooq Malik Bitta in The Kashmir Files) yet again delivers another smashing performance as Shivaji Maharaj. His entry scene is also quite memorable. Mukesh Rishi is menacing as the villain and enhances the impact. Mrinal Kulkarni (Rajmata Jijabai) and Isha Keskar (Saibai) leave a mark. Director Digpal Lanjekar is quite good in the role of Bahirji Naik. His act in the song ‘Shivba Raja’ will be loved. All in all, Sher Shivraj works due to the subject and a superb climax. Its shows are increasing day by day and it’ll surely be a lambi race ka ghoda in cinemas.

My rating – *** ½ out of 5!
