(Crisp) Movie Review: AK vs AK by FENIL SETA

AK vs AK is a crazy and mad ride. Avinash Sampath‘s story is truly unique and never before seen in Indian cinema. Avinash Sampath and Vikramaditya Motwane‘s screenplay adds to the thrill and also to the humour quotient. Anurag Kashyap‘s dialogues are realistic and the references to Bollywood and its celebs are hilarious. Vikramaditya Motwane‘s direction does total justice. This was a very challenging film as it’s presented in a found footage fashion. Also, there are multiple long takes and to get it right is praiseworthy. On the flipside, the film drags a bit in the middle. One wishes this 1 hour 48 minutes long film was 10-15 minutes shorter. The climax is unpredictable but the sudden developments are difficult to digest. Speaking of performances, Anil Kapoor delivers one of the greatest performances of his career. One has to see it to believe the kind of performance he has managed to deliver with this film. Anurag Kashyap has always been a great actor and this film confirms that. There was a certain degree of madness required for the part which he brings to the fore effortlessly. Yogita Bihani is hardly seen in the film but does fine. Harsh Varrdhan Kapoor is over the top but that was the requirement of the film. Sonam Kapoor, Boney Kapoor are fine in their cameos. Vipul Deshpande (Police inspector), Pawan Singh (Javed), Mohammed Kaleem Zia (Rahim Chacha) and Manoj Mathre (Hotel Manager Mathur) leave a mark. All in all, AK vs AK is a wacky, experimental effort that succeeds big time. Don’t miss!

My rating – **** out of 5!
