(Crisp) Movie Review: NOPE by FENIL SETA

Nope is Jordan Peele’s next film after the much-loved Get Out and Us. It talks about a pair of siblings who discover a sinister development happening around their remote base in the western USA. As expected, the setting is absolutely fascinating and adds to the fun and scare quotient. The manner in which the characters try to achieve their agenda and the struggles they face makes for a great watch. The film is 2 hours and 15 minutes long and till a point, one doesn’t mind the length. However, the film loses steam a bit in the climax. The finale no doubt is great but could have been shorter. Secondly, certain plot points are similar to a popular Hollywood film. It would be wrong to name it as it’ll give out the climax. The other shortcoming is with regards to Daniel Kaluuya’s performance. This exceptional actor, under the pretext of underplaying his part, ends up looking blank and expressionless. Keke Palmer is quite entertaining. Steven Yeun (Ricky) leaves a huge mark in a small role. His track is terrific. Special mention should also go to Jacob Kim who plays the young Ricky. Brandon Perea (Angel) delivers a fine performance. Michael Wincott is decent. Michael Abels‘s music adds to the chilling effect. All in all, Nope is yet another thrilling ride from Jordan Peele. It’s worth watching on IMAX screens.

My rating – *** ½ out of 5!
