(Crisp) Movie Review: WEAPONS by FENIL SETA

Weapons, which releases tomorrow in cinemas, is a story of a town where 17 children disappear at 2:17 AM. The film rests on a fantastic concept and writer-director Zach Cregger ensures that viewers get a time of their lives. Hence, nothing is ordinary, be it with storytelling, direction, camerawork and even jumpscares. Any other filmmaker or writer would have introduced all the characters in one go, but Zach takes a novel route. The experiment works big time. A few scenes are terrifying and surprisingly, there are enough intentional comic moments as well in these horrifying sequences. The film gets better in the second half but watch out for the climax. It’s shocking and disturbing and yet exhilarating and again, very unique. The only minor hiccup is that a few loose ends are not taken care of properly. But considering the other areas where Zach has achieved greatness, it can be overlooked. Julia Garner (Justine Gandy) dominates the first half and delivers a fantastic performance. Josh Brolin (Archer Graff) leaves a huge mark, as expected. Cary Christopher (Alex Lily) has a crucial part and does well. Benedict Wong (Marcus), Amy Madigan (Gladys), Alden Ehrenreich (Paul) and Austin Abrams (James) rock the show in small roles. All in all, Weapons is the best film of the year. Missing it in cinemas will be a crime.
