Tanvi The Great is directed by Anupam Kher and features him in a supporting role. The film revolves around a young autistic girl who wants to join the army. The film is well-intentioned and shows promise in many places. Sadly, the desired impact is not made for several reasons – excessive length, too many songs, lack of proper characterization, tacky VFX etc. The My-Name-Is-Khan-meets-12th-Fail pre-climax and climax also fall short. Debutant Shubhangi Dutt gives a wonderful performance and shows a lot of promise. Anupam Kher the actor is much better than Anupam Kher the director. Pallavi Joshi is lovely and deserves to be seen more. Karan Tacker is adorable in a cameo. Boman Irani is sincere but is let down by the writing. Jackie Shroff (Brigadier Joshi), Arvind Swami (Major Srinivas) and Nasser (Brigadier K N Rao) leave a mark. All in all, Tanvi The Great is made with noble intentions but writing and execution fail to do justice to the subject.
My rating – ** out of 5!
